My name is Cherrie and it is an honor to be maintaining this site. The group will be meeting at the NMB Library from 2-4 pm on Saturday. We welcome new writers!!! Come with your short stories, novel excerpts and poetry. We have an eclectic group of writers.

February 9 - a presentation.
Topic: "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)" by Dr. Roy Gradin.

Dr Gradin is a member of Aventura Writing Group and a retired psychologist with the 30 year professional career practicing behavioral psychology in Massachusetts. After his retirement and re-location to the Miami area, he began writing his memoir about his experience raising a son with ADHD and the severe behavior problems that are associated with the disorder. In addition to sharing his expertise on the topic of ADHD Dr Gradin, a novice at writing professionally, will describe the course that researching and writing the book took him on. During this process, he began a detailed description of the procedures that he developed and followed to manage the behavior problems that his son (now a 22 yr-old junior at FSU) exhibited on a daily basis. As a result of the research that he was doing for his book, it became evident that there was no effective behavioral treatment available for severe behavioral symptoms of ADHD or the more difficult to manage ADHD with ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder). Dr Gradin recently presented the treatment that he created and formalized into "Non-Traditional Parenting: The solution to solving ADHDs severest behavior problems" along with the research that he completed working exclusively via the Internet with the mother of a difficult 7 year-old boy, at the International Conference on ADHD in Washington D C on November the 8 th this year. This is also the title of his book. Dr Gradin provides an interesting account of what has developed into a major breakthrough in the treatment of ADHD, which has been long over due.

Dr Gradin is an author, speaker and behavioral consultant from Boston who is frequently in the South Florida area. For more information he can be contacted at adhdnet@aol.com. He is currently scheduling a series of seminars and workshops in the region including a free teleseminar in March. You can also keep a watch out for his bi-monthly column scheduled to begin in April. This additional resource for the ADHD community will include questions from readers.

Although this workshop is geared towards the children's market, participants of any genre can benerfit from the workshop's contents.

Aventura Writing Group wishes to all of you Happy New Year!
We are looking forward to the great presentations and workshops and to the opportunity to share our experience and knowledge with the group.

We will continue our meetings at North Miami Beach Library twice a month on the second and fourth Saturdays from 2 pm to 4 pm. I confirmed our schedule with the library for January and February.

Here is the schedule:

Find the Perfect Pitch by Sara Williams

You’ve written a four-hundred-page manuscript and it’s ready to be shared with the world. What to do next? If you’re a savvy marketer, you’ll learn to describe it in one catchy sentence. The pitch (or the log line in the case of a movie script) is that vital phrase that sums up your work in one breath.

At the December 8 meeting we’ll do a hands-on pitch session where each writer will work with a partner, first to describe the work in a short statement or synopsis, and then to pitch it to the class.
The pitch is designed to pique the interest of an editor or a literary agent—or the reader you hope to interest at a booksigning. You have about thirty seconds to put out the magic words that will make the reader pick up your book, or motivate an agent or an editor to ask to see your proposal and your sample chapters.

At one famous literary conference authors are encouraged to spend an evening pitching their book to the bathroom mirror, and next day authors walk through the crowds pitching their books to each other. The most fearless or foolhardy are invited to pitch their book for the Jay Leno talk show.

Here are some exercises to help you think about a pitch. Some successful pitches answer the question what if: What if Jesus had a wife? (The DaVinci Code). Or, What if there was an English boarding school for magicians? (Harry Potter.)

Some books are pitched in terms of another work: It’s The Perfect Storm—in an RV. Or, It’s Moby Dick except with a shark (Jaws). Or, it’s the “South Pacific” of the Vietnam War (MASH).

Use the analogy of another writer’s work to put across what’s different about yours. For instance, Sara pitches her forthcoming novel One Big Itch as a Tony Hillerman style of novel but set in Hawaii. Or The Serenoa Scandal, it’s a book about Florida’s tropical wild west.

Some popular fiction picks up on current themes. What if an artist falls in love with his model? (The Girl with the Pearl Earring; Woman in Red).

Fall Schedule Update

Members of Aventura Writing Group:

We have only 2 meetings left in this year - one more in October and then, one in December. There are no meetings in November due to the FWA Conference in Orlando and Thanksgivings.

The next meeting of our group will be held on Saturday, October 27th, from 2 to 4 pm at North Miami Beach Public Library. This is a critique meeting. So bring up to 5 pages of your work in progress or come to listen and to give your feedback to the others.

About David Gittlin: David is President of Entellegint Entertainment, Screenwriter/Producer/Director/Author and a member of Aventura Writing Group.

After a career in Marketing and Business Communications, David Gittlin created Entelligent Entertainment, a production company dedicated to the development of stories that come from the heart and explore the human dilemma. David Gittlin studied screenwriting and novel writing at UCLA. He is currently developing one of his screenplays into a novel.

David's film "Love Will Find You" enjoyed a World Premiere screening at the Muvico Parisiene Theatre at City Place in West Palm Beach as an official selection of the Palm Beach International Film Festival. The film was also broadcast on WHDTV in West Palm Beach as part of their "Screening Room" series hosted by Brian Content.

"How to catch one of those rare and elusive creatures that are essential to any successful author. Yes, I'm talking about literary agents." Follow Robert Mykle, through his travails in acquiring a literary agent for his first book then after the first agent retired going through the entire process again. You'll find out the dos and don'ts when searching for a literary agent. What they do for you and what you, as an author, can expect from them.

BIO: Robert Mykle, award-winning author of KILLER ‘CANE: The Deadly Hurricane of 1928, is an avid explorer and adventurer. Aside from new literary ventures, he is working on a number of international humanitarian and environmental projects. Robert is a recipient of The Florida Historical Library Foundation's award.

Get ready for the next meeting

Thank you all for attending our meeting on Saturday and thanks to Jeff Rivera for his stimulating presentation From Self-Publishing to Publishing Success.

Our next meeting at the library will be held on Saturday, January 27. This time, we will talk about our projects. Since this is our first 2-hour critique meeting, we will spend some time on establishing the rules and guidelins for our future critique meetings.

Meanwhile, here is a guideline for the next meeting:

If you want to receive feedback from the group on your Work In Progress (WIP) or your complete manuscript, contact me at least a week prior to the meeting.

If you want feedback on the entire manuscript:

- bring the five first pages (double-spaced) and read it to the group
- based on the genre, someone will volunteer to critique it. You may either bring 2-3 copies with you or propose at the meeting how to pass the manuscript to the reviewer(s). Some people might prefer an electronic copy. Based on size of the manuscript, we will set up a timeframe for feedback. The author & reviewer(s) will decide how they will communicate.

If you have WIP and want your peers feedback about a specific chapter, bring 10 or so copies and read it at the meeting and receive feedback right away. Please no more than 5-6 pages (double-spaced).

Jeff Rivera, author of the forthcoming novel, FOREVER MY LADY went from Self-Published to Published when Warner Books purchased the rights to his novel. Mr. Rivera will discuss how to use self-publishing as a tool to landing a contract with a major publisher.

Happy Holidays!

South Florida writers,

Great news - begining January 2007, the Aventura Writers Group will meet twice a month on the second and forth Saturdays. The first meeting of the month will be a speaker/educational meeting. The second one will be a critique meeting. Both meetings will be held from 2 pm to 4 pm at North Miami Beach Library located on the corner of NE 164th Street & 16 Ave in North Miami Beach.

Here is our preliminary schedule for January and February:

January 13 & 27
February 10 & 24

This schedule was confirmed with the library, but they reserve the rights to change it. Keep checking this blog for any changes.

If you have a speaker in mind or want to make a presentation to the group on January 13 or February 10, please send me email with your or the speaker's name and a brief description of the presentation. Remember, our motto is "Writers help writers".

Re: critique meetings. Here is a proposed procedure (please feel free to send me your comments):

1. You must either send me email with your request or notify me at the speaker meeting that you want to present your Work-In-Progress (WIP) or manuscript at the next meeting.

2. If you want feedback on the entire manuscript:

- bring the five first pages and read it to the group
- based on the genre, someone will volunteer to critique it. You may either bring 2-3 copies with you or propose at the meeting how to pass the manuscript to the reviewer(s). Some people might prefer an electronic copy. Based on size of the manuscript, we will set up a timeframe for feedback. The author & reviewer(s) will decide how they will communicate.

I'll try to obtain a standard review form prior to January 27.

A few of us just came back from the FWA Conference in Orlando. This was a great experience of learning from and networking with other writers, presenters, and agents.
